Golf & Rugby Added to 2010 Olympics

For the first time since 1904, golf will return as a Summer Olympic sport for the 2010 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Golf, along with rugby, was voted on by Olympic officials to join the Summer Olympic sports. This will bring over 120 more athletes into the competition.

Golf won the vote 63-27, while rugby won by 81-8. The last time new sports were added to the Olympics was Tae Kwon Do and the Triathlon, which were added in 2000.

There is a lot of controversy surrounding these decisions, because many people feel that golf is a sport played by rich people, and some places do not allow women to play golf.

I think it will be extremely interesting to see the success of these two sports in the Olympics games.  I can’t say that I agree rugby and golf are Olympic-worthy, but I am very curious to see how Tiger Woods will do.
