Caster Semenya’s Gender in Question

Caster Semenya is an 18-year-old from South Africa who runs the women’s 800m, and recently won the world championship. This summer, Semenya’s gender was questioned because she is extremely athletic, and has a masculine appearance and deeper voice. It is also noted that she has three times as much testosterone than that of normal women.

It is assumed that she is a Hermaphrodite, meaning she possess both male and female characteristics. This sparks controversy, because people want to take away her title if she was competing in a woman’s event, when she is really a man.

People are concerned for Semenya because she is attracting so much attention at a young age, and feel that her country should be doing more to protect her.
Semenya is not the only person to have this problem. There have been several athletes who were hermaphrodites, and had their metals taken away after a gender test.

It is only a matter of time before this situation is figured out. If Semenya considers herself a woman, I don’t think a test should prove otherwise.
